Misalignment of the eyes is referred to as strabismus.
With esotropia, the eyes are crossed in. With
exotropia, the eyes are drifting out. Strabismus
can be either constant or intermittent. There
are many causes for misalignments. However, most
cases of strabismus are seen in young children.
Children with strabismus must be evaluated and
treated urgently. When eyes are not lined up properly,
children can develop amblyopia, or "lazy eye."
Amblyopia can only be corrected in early childhood.
The older a child gets, the more difficult it
is for a child with amblyopia to recover vision.
If you are worried that your child's eyes are
not straight, schedule a comprehensive ophthalmic
examination today. At Sugarland Eye & Laser Center,
we will complete detailed sensorimotor testing
to diagnose the specific strabismus and to guide
treatment.
