VISX
is used by more LASIK surgeons in the United States
than all other excimer lasers combined. This is
not surprising considering the numerous advantages
VISX offers. VISX has been the trusted name in
excimer lasers since LASIK surgery's earliest
cases. The fact that they have been around since
the beginning and are now on their fourth generation
of excimer lasers is a testament to the superiority
of this technology.
Unlike flying-spot lasers, the size of VISX's
laser spot is variable. The spot size can vary
from 0.65 to 6.5 mm. This allows the cornea to
be treated with far more efficiency. Tracking
is a critical element of an accurate excimer laser
system. This refers to the laser's ability to
follow minute movements of the eye. Patients'
do not have to worry about moving their eyes during
treatment if a good tracking system is being used.
VISX's tracking system follows the eye in all
3 dimensions. Many other lasers track the eye
in only 2 directions. For example, if the eye
moves from side-to-side (x-axis) or up-and-down
(y-axis) the laser will move with you. In addition
to following the eye in these 2 directions, VISX
3-D Tracking also follows your eye if it move
closer or farther away from the laser (z-axis).
Iris registration is another level of tracking
offered only by VISX. This technology corrects
for any minute rotational movements of the eyes
which have been well-documented to occur. Click
on Iris Registration on the sidebar to learn more.
Wavefront-guided
customized laser treatments are based on the individual
characteristics of the eye that is being corrected.
A wavefront is a complex measurement of the unique
way light behaves in each individual eye. It can
be compared to a "fingerprint" of the eye. VISX's
customized treatment are based on your individual
wavefront. Other lasers claim to offer customization,
but the treatments are actually "wavefront
optimized." This refers to laser treatment
software that has been designed with certain corrections
pre-programmed, although a true and customized
wavefront plan is not employed.
